In logistics, AI-based applications enhance the flow of supplies and stock, with as little input from people as possible. This increases automation and results in job losses, especially for workers without adequate skills. Work that requires repetitive movements of the limbs is most susceptible to automation. For instance, cashiers, factory workers, and data entry clerks are realizing that their job roles are being automated by AI systems. According to a 2019 Brookings Institution study, about 25% of the jobs in the United States are vulnerable to automation with the level of risk depending on the area and sector.

It also redesigns and enhances current occupations by supplementing human performances instead of substituting them. For instance, in the healthcare sector, AI is used to help doctors make diagnoses through image recognition and the use of predictive models. In finance, AI assists analysts by searching for patterns in a large dataset and coming up with suitable investment decisions. This co-dependency between man and machine means that there is improvement in the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

The transition to an AI-intensive job environment is altering the skills that employees need to possess. Technical competencies, including coding, data management, and artificial intelligence, are in high demand. Nevertheless, competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence are also gaining importance as they cannot be effectively outsourced and are highly relevant for occupations involving human and AI interfaces.

These new demands are thus being met by educational institutions and training programs. Increased focus is put on education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math; and on education and training throughout the lifetime.

Economic and Social Implications

The implications of AI on the job market are complex when it comes to the economic aspect. On one hand, AI results in productivity improvements, which brings about economic development and innovation. However, it increases economic inequality due to job displacement and an increase in the skills gap. Those employees who fail to move to new positions or develop needed competencies are at risk of extended unemployment or underemployment.
